Financial aid is applied to your student account on scheduled disbursement dates. Your financial aid first pays eligible charges owed to the University. If your eligible financial aid exceeds those charges, the remaining credit balance may be issued to you as a refund.
Do I Get a Financial Aid Refund?
You may receive a financial aid refund if your eligible financial aid exceeds the charges on your student account.
Refunds are issued using one of the following methods:
- Direct deposit: Funds are typically available within 2–3 business days after the refund is processed, depending on your financial institution. Direct deposit is the fastest and most secure way to receive your refund.
- Paper check: If you are not enrolled in direct deposit, a paper check will be mailed to the local mailing address on file with ÈËÆÞÖгöÊÓƵ.

Before Using Your Refund
If you receive a financial aid refund, keep the following in mind:
- If you are enrolled in courses that begin later in the semester, you may need to retain a portion of your refund to pay charges associated with those courses.
- Changes to your enrollment, including withdrawing from the University or dropping courses, may affect your financial aid eligibility and could result in a balance owed to ÈËÆÞÖгöÊÓƵ. Review Enrollment Status and Withdrawal Implications for more information.
If you believe you should have received a refund but did not, contact One Stop at (205) 652-3800.
What Does a Negative Balance on My Student Account Mean?
A negative balance displayed on your student account generally indicates that your account has a credit balance rather than an amount due.
If the credit results from eligible financial aid remaining after applicable University charges have been paid, the credit may be issued to you as a refund.
A negative balance does not necessarily mean that a refund has already been processed. Changes to financial aid eligibility, enrollment, charges, or other account activity may affect the final amount available for refund.
Where Will My Refund Be Sent?
Direct Deposit
If you are enrolled in direct deposit, your refund will be sent to the bank account you provided through Self-Service.
Students are encouraged to use direct deposit because it generally provides faster access to funds and reduces the risks associated with mailed checks.
.
Paper Check
If you are not enrolled in direct deposit, your refund will be issued by paper check and mailed to the local mailing address ÈËÆÞÖгöÊÓƵ has on file.
To review your local mailing address:
- Log in to Self-Service.
- Select User Options.
- Select User Profile.
- Review your local mailing address and update it if necessary.
What Should I Do If I Did Not Receive an Issued Refund?
Direct Deposit Was Sent to a Closed Account
If a direct deposit is sent to a closed bank account, the financial institution will generally return the funds to ÈËÆÞÖгöÊÓƵ. After the funds are returned, a paper check will be mailed to the local address on file.
Paper Check Was Not Received
If you have not received a paper refund check and have not been notified by ÈËÆÞÖгöÊÓƵ that the check was returned as undeliverable, you may request a replacement check after 10 business days from the check’s issue date.

Understanding Disbursements and Refunds
Financial Aid Disbursement Date: The date eligible financial aid is scheduled to be applied to your student account. A disbursement is not the same as a refund.
Refund Processing Date: If your eligible financial aid exceeds your applicable University charges and creates a credit balance, this is the date ÈËÆÞÖгöÊÓƵ is scheduled to process the refund.
Date You Receive Your Refund: The date you actually receive the funds. For direct deposit, this depends in part on processing by your financial institution. Mailed paper checks may take additional time to arrive.
Receiving a refund is not guaranteed on the refund processing date listed. Your financial aid eligibility, enrollment, outstanding requirements, account activity, and refund method may affect whether you receive a refund and when it becomes available.
