What is the Difference Between a Level 1 Trauma Center and the Emergency Department?

A trauma patient is someone who has suffered a serious, unexpected injury. Common trauma injuries include accidents, violence, or natural disasters. Trauma patients may arrive on their own or by ambulance or helicopter. Trauma patients undergo initial evaluation and stabilization in the emergency department (emergency room) by a highly specialized team that includes emergency medicine providers and trauma specialists.

Many injured patients require highly specialized inpatient hospital care. A Level 1 Trauma Center contains a developed system that coordinates the often complex care required by trauma patients and their families. Our trauma service continues the process of stabilization of the patient and identification and management of injuries that was initiated in the emergency department.

Based on the kind of traumatic injuries you have, we involve and coordinate care provided by many different specialty teams:

Our trauma service is run by nine acute care surgery fellowship-trained surgeons. We are specialists in trauma surgery and emergency general surgery and have additional board certification in surgical critical care. Our trauma surgeons and surgical critical care specialists are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
