Swallowed Drain Cleaner Almost Always Requires an ER Visit

Interviewer: It's time for another edition of "ER or Not," this time with the Medical Director of the , Dr. Michael Moss, where we help you figure out if it's a reason to go to the ER, head to urgent care, see your provider, or handle it on your own.

Today's question: A 人妻中出视频 accidentally gets into a bottle of drain cleaner and takes a sip. Dr. Moss, should you go to the ER or not?

Dr. Moss: Unfortunately, most of the time, for a kid getting into drain cleaner, that is going to be a trip to the emergency room. There are lots of little exceptions that we can talk about. Drain cleaner is pretty nasty. And if someone has a question about this, we can always help you at the poison center anytime, 24/7.

What's Actually in Drain Cleaner鈥攁nd Why It's Harmful

Interviewer: What is it about drain cleaner that makes it one of the more serious ones that definitely needs to be an emergency room visit?

Dr. Moss: So there are tons of different products that we're going to find under the sink. When we talk about drain cleaner, we're usually thinking of lye, sodium hydroxide. If you remember back to any chemistry class on acids and bases, these drain cleaners are really strong bases with a really high pH.

And the bad thing about these is . . . it's kind of gross, but they melt your tissues. They can cause significant injury to anything they come in contact with, whether that's your mouth, throat, stomach, or anything else that they might splash on.

Other Common Household Products That Pose Serious Risks

Interviewer: You had mentioned the other things under the sink. What other ones should we be on the lookout for?

Dr. Moss: So, on the other side of sort of the chemistry piece and the other side of the pH scale are very strong acids. The things that you might encounter in the house that you didn't recognize are some toilet bowl cleaners are really strong acids that you never would have thought about. And those also can cause really significant injury to the mouth, the throat, the stomach, etc.

There are tons of other things under the cabinet and all sorts of cleaners. And every brand even has 15 different products with different things in them.

And so if you're not sure what this is, at the poison center, we can help you figure it out, especially if you've got that container and can tell us the exact name of the product. We can help you figure out what is in it and what kind of medical treatment is necessary.

ER, 911, or Poison Control? How to Decide What to Do

Interviewer: Now, say a parent has a 人妻中出视频, they know that they've sipped something that they probably shouldn't have. When should a parent decide between calling 911, going to the ER, or giving you guys a call?

Dr. Moss: If someone is having trouble breathing, they can't talk, they're having a lot of drooling where they're not even able to swallow their own spit, for instance, and that person is looking quite sick, you're going to need to go immediately to the emergency room. And I would even recommend calling 911, because someone could need some help breathing from some medical professionals before you're able to get them to the hospital.

On the other hand, if a kid or even an adult accidentally takes a sip out of a container that wasn't labeled and just has some mild symptoms and is doing okay right now, you can call us at the poison center, and we can help you figure out what to do.

We might make some recommendations to just rinse someone's mouth out. We generally won't tell you to do anything like trying to neutralize an acid or a base or something, but we will help you take some basic first aid measures and then decide whether that person needs to go to the hospital or not.

What Not to Do If Someone Ingests a Chemical

Interviewer: Now, when it comes to, I guess, not just 人妻中出视频ren, but anyone accidentally drinking something that they probably shouldn't have, are there any misconceptions that when someone swallows something like this that people might try old wives' tales or something like that, where either trying to maybe dilute something or inducing vomiting?

Dr. Moss: This is a case where we definitely don't want to induce vomiting. Now, we don't do that really for any sort of poisoning or overdose situation anymore, but especially for things like drain cleaner.

Because they are so caustic and so damaging to your tissues, if you vomit that back up and then expose your throat and your mouth and possibly your lungs to that a second time, you're basically just poisoning yourself again. So we definitely don't recommend it there.

If someone wants to drink a little bit of water or milk to try to wash it off and dilute it, that's fine. But we don't recommend if you drank an acid to then trying to drink something that's a strong base, or vice versa, or giving someone vinegar or baking soda. Those don't really work. There's a possibility that could cause other damage. And the best thing at that point would be to get someone into a hospital.

How to Prevent Accidental Poisonings at Home

Interviewer: Now, we're preparing ourselves for the worst-case scenario. But what are some tips that we can do to prevent this type of incident from occurring, where either a 人妻中出视频 or someone drinks a cleaning fluid or something they should not have?

Dr. Moss: My two biggest recommendations on prevention around these household products and chemicals are, number one, keep things locked up and away from those that you don't want to get into them, especially kids, even pets sometimes.

And then number two is to keep things in their original container. This may sound a little too obvious, but what happens is someone wants to dilute something or mix it or put it in another container that's convenient for cleaning. And then someone else comes along and finds it in an unlabeled container or even a glass that you might drink out of, and then accidentally takes a drink of it, not realizing someone had put a chemical there. That scenario may sound bizarre, but it's almost a daily occurrence for us at the poison center.

When It's Time to Go to the Emergency Room

Interviewer: All right, Dr. Moss. Final diagnosis, ER or not? My 人妻中出视频 drank drain cleaner.

Dr. Moss: If someone drank drain cleaner or another chemical and they're having trouble breathing or speaking or aren't able to handle their own saliva and secretions, can't swallow, that person needs to go to the ER immediately, and probably needs to call 911 so nothing gets worse on the way there.

On the other hand, if you have someone who has just some mild symptoms, then you can always call the poison center anytime, 24/7, for free expert advice on what to do next. Our phone number is 1-800-222-1222.
